After an extensive R\u0026amp;D spanning several years, Chris and Peter have now finished the first Tribal Boards production series.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3 class=\"ecom-accordion__title-text ecom-items--text\"\u003eSHAPE\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eIt’s tempting to just scale down a fast slalom board and drop the rocker, as others have done, but we designed our speed range from scratch. With purpose. Speed sailing creates a different set of demands to slalom sailing, so we designed the optimal shape to cover important performance features, making these new speed boards outstanding.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eSlalom boards need wider tails so that longer fins and more outboard foot position can be used for crosswind and upwind capability. In gybes you can accelerate quickly out of the turns in chop by providing additional surface area in the tail. When going downwind at very high speed, the wider tail board can operate efficiently with no chop and short wetted length. Cutouts help to keep the angle up, and reduce the planing area behind the foot. In chop, the board has to sit at a lower angle otherwise the impacts create too much lift, but this results in a lot of contact area and higher drag due to the width. \u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eOur speed board shapes allow significantly reduced board width in the contact areas for a given sail size, resulting in immediate reduction in drag, and less effect from chop impact. When banking a turn with a good slalom board, forward rail engagement needs to produce a significant turning moment but with a very stable manner. Hitting chop in the gybe should result in a moderate but predictable increase in the turn rate. \u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eSlalom board rockers, with aggressive V around the mast track, whilst helpful for turning in heavy swell and chop, causes instability where the board hits chop in this area at high speed, especially when the chop angle is not dead square to the board. One side hits the chop first, and this causes the board to roll, creating control problems and instability. The narrower the board, the more pronounced is this effect. This is the point where the board no longer “flies” and the rider has to resort to more blunt methods of control using body weight on the board to keep the fin wet and avoid spinout- increasing drag and further reducing stability. \u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eThe result is that we understand that the optimal shape for a slalom board fundamentally conflicts with those of a speedboard. In aiming to satisfy these optimisations for speed, we necessarily sacrifice the ease of gybing in heavy chop and swell to make a better speed board. On water, where our speed boards are intended to be used, the turning capability is outstanding: full control of the rail at full power and really high exit speeds. Perfect for smoking fast “alphas” on GPS. \u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e We designed the Tribal Rapid speed board series with this, and other subtle requirements in mind. They have no-compromise stability in a straight line at high speed, even when there is moderate chop, which is inevitable at most real-world speed venues. The result looks quite different to the already super fast slalom line, but geared for practical, pure speed sailing. \u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e Standout features are the length - slightly longer than other boards in this class (237cm), and the outline having its wide point forward, and a pronounced pin tail. Essentially we stretched the tail. The rails through the middle of the board are noticeably bulked out and jacked up, so that the board pops onto the plane easily, glides through lulls, and punches upwind for the next run. \u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e Combined these allow a reduced wetted area for the size of the board, and starting wind range, whilst maintaining a more balanced and stable trim due to the extensive low rocker mid section. Overall you can use a smaller board comfortably, with a larger sail, in less wind, with higher overall speeds. Overall V assists in railing the board when desired. This fin was (and still is) an outstanding performer up to 50kts, claiming national records and holding GPSSS outright speeds right up until the canal in Luderitz opened up a new era in windsurfing records. The design brief at the time was to make a fin that could easily get to 50kts. It was the first production fin to do so back in 2009.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eWHY USE ASSYMMETRIC FINS?\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThe benefit of a correctly designed Asymmetric fin is that on the “ON” side, the maximum available lift can be a lot greater than an equivalent symmetric fin with the same top speed capability, and also the drag is appreciably lower. So it’s a win-win situation for really high speed sailing, and you can get away with a lower surface area. The downside is sailing the other tack, where the maximum lift will be significantly diminished.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eWHY A TRIBAL ASY?\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThere are many trade-offs in fin design, especially when it comes down to doing really high speeds. Basically, you need to use thinner profiles as the design speed goes up. Also the more asymmetry (camber) you put into a fin, the thinner it has to be. There is less margin for manufacturing tolerances, and structural limits are quickly reached. There is also a fundamental trade-off between low speed performance and high speed capability. The details of this are beyond the scope of this introduction.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eDESIGN CHALLENGE\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThis creates a considerable design challenge. It’s easy to add some camber and make a fast fin by flattening one side of a standard foil, but what you end up with, is a sub-optimal fin that will have higher drag than necessary. It won’t be useable on the other tack, or at best this will prove very difficult. And it’s also likely to be average at both low speeds and high speeds thanks to its thickness.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eTACK PERFORMANCE\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eSo with these trade-offs in mind, we set to work on the best all-round shape to accommodate these issues, and found a nice balance that sacrifices none of the “ON” tack performances, extended out to significantly higher speeds than the earlier KA series. The “OFF” tack performance is remarkable for an asymmetric fin and offers an easy ride back upwind, without the constant spin-outs and crashes associated with other designs. On the run, these fins offer superb low drag performance and confidence to break records. This also applies to places where the bottom is uneven and there are sandbars which can be difficult to navigate. Often seagrass or algae is attached, and even protrudes from the surface, resulting in mirror flat water, ideal for speed sailing. For these applications, extreme rake is required - firstly for safety, and secondly for reduced drag from weed\/algae contamination. If a sandbar is encountered, the extreme tip rake of these specialised fins significantly reduces the impact loads and saves catapults.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eWe looked at the locations, and the requirements to suit this style of sailing afforded by shallow seaweed beds. The challenges include the extra drag and erosion when cutting through surface type seaweed, starting in shallow water where the fin is likely to drag along the bottom, and the extreme rake causing problems with balance and power. We engineered the fin to simultaneously consider these constraints, and the design shape is unique as a result.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eDELTA WEED OR DELTA SYM\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThe Delta Sym was developed for similar conditions as the Delta Weed, but with slightly less rake so we could reduce the surface area and decrease drag as a result. The original Delta offers the highest resilience to debris of any of the Tribal range, with extreme tip rake, thickness for both durability and stiffness, and surface area to increase usability at lower speeds (upwind, or in lulls).\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eFor locations with thick and heavy weed, where getting started is potentially an issue or leading edge drag is substantial, the Delta is the one to go for. If you are confident in starting, and going upwind with slightly less powerful fins, and the weed is not always covering the surface, the Delta Sym has the potential to hit top speeds with less drag. Both designs have been successfully tested in moderate conditions to \u0026gt;45 knots.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eOUTSTANDING LOW-END POWER \u0026amp; RESISTANCE TO SPIN-OUTS\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThe designed-for-purpose foil profiles deliver outstanding low end power and resistance to spin-out, with unmatched recovery behaviour. This means you can run a much shorter fin for the same amount of power, but with drastically reduced drag and increased confidence to push at speed. This causes the lifting surface in the tip to be located a long way behind the centre of rotation of the board (trim axis). This is not really a problem deep off the wind with short speed fins, but as you go larger the problem becomes worse. In the end, the straight leading edge is a big compromise in balance. Upwind or across the wind, where the centre of pressure of the fin is too far back for optimal balance with the rig, is where you notice this the most.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eTYPES OF SEAWEED\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThere are many types of seaweed, and the ability of a fin to successfully shed these different types of weed very much depends on the fin design, as well as local variables.
